As Thanksgiving quickly approaches, we are reminded of the Holy Child tradition to reach out to needy families in the community. This year, we have identified 12 local families who are in need of our support. We will deliver baskets filled with fresh food, groceries and baked goods to these families the morning of Sunday, November 24, 2018 beginning at 8am.

This year we will be supporting families at St. Charles in Drexel Hill, St. George in Norwood and St. Laurence in Upper Darby. The Seventh and Eighth Graders will bake desserts under the direction of Dr. Kellich. The 3rd and 4th graders will make cards and placemats to personalize the baskets. We kindly ask each student to help provide other items needed for the Thanksgiving dinner.

**Nursery 3 students are being asked to donate two large jars of applesauce.**

We have begun snack table during our Montessori work period.

How it works:  Each morning the children are told what is on the menu.  For example, 2 grahams, 4 apple slices or a banana.  When the children are hungry during the work period, they may go get a snack if a seat is open at the table.  No more than 3 at a time may be at the table.  The child gets their name tag (name recognition) from the table, places it in the basket, gets a napkin, their snack and pours their water.  YES!  I just said pours:-)

What it promotes: independence, respect and self awareness.

SCIENCE

In science this week e blew up a balloon using vinegar and baking soda.  When the vinegar (the acid) and baking soda (the base) are mixed together it causes a chemical reaction which blows up the balloon.

How? When the two are mixed together they create a gas called carbon dioxide.  Gasses need a lot of room to expand so the CO2 starts to fill the bottle and then moves into the balloon to inflate it.  We thought it was pretty cool!!

November 4th - 8th

This week the Nursery 3 students learned about table manners!

We also learned a song to remind us to always say please.

Please pass the peas.
Please pass the peas.
It's always right to be polite!
Please pass the peas.

We substituted peas for others foods like mashed potatoes, cranberries, pumpkin pie and turkey.

We practiced saying "Yes, please" and "No, thank you" for Thanksgiving foods we may or may not want to try.  The children took turns saying to each other "Would you like turkey?" or "Would you like mashed potatoes?"  Each child took turns asking and replying.

October 27th - November 1st

You are never to young to give back!

The early childhood students filled snack bags to donate to Nutritional Development Services.  The children filled 100 bags to be given to children in families who are homeless.

We had a beautiful day for our school wide picnic!  All grades enjoyed lunch al fresco style hosted by our student council members.

To create our candy corn master pieces, the children torn white, orange and yellow paper.  The action of tearing helps to strengthen the muscles in their tiny hands and fingers.  Once the paper was torn, they used it to fill in the candy corn.

Mission Party Fun!!!
Thank you to all of those who made this fun morning possible:-)

Happy Halloween!  Enjoy the three day weekend.

This week in Science the Nursery 3 and Pre-K students were introduced to the concept of Chemistry and chemical reactions by creating a pumpkin volcano.

First we needed to clean out the inside of the pumpkin.  Each student got to stick their hands inside and pull out some seeds and pulp.  They were then asked to explain what it felt like; some said slimy, others said gooey and some did not want to touch it at all.

Once we cleaned out the pumpkin guts, it was time to start our "experiment". While the children do not fully understand the concept of a chemical reaction, the seed of knowledge was planted.

So what does cause the pumpkin volcano to erupt?  We mixed baking soda (the base) with vinegar (the acid) together causing a chemical reaction, the eruption!

THE ERUPTION!!

To celebrate our Founder's Day, our older students led the younger students in both fun and service-related activities.  We decorated brown paper bags that will be filled with snacks for children experiencing homelessness, chalk drawings of the HCA seal that remind us of Cornelia's joyful message, pumpkin rolling, and relay races.
Cornelia would have been proud of all the joy!
