October 22nd-October 26th

We did our very first directed drawing. Directed drawings provide children with a ton of practice in following directions and paying attention to detail. Children need to listen and follow instructions closely while paying close attention to details or they might miss a step. Directions are given step by step.

Directed drawings produce masterpieces.

Learning Balance

Balance is a significant component of child's development.  Children must learn to balance before they can move on to higher leveled gross motor like running, skipping or jumping.  Our younger have been practicing balance in PE with Mrs. Mossor.

We practice various types of safety drills regularly with the students.  This week we had an evacuation drill.  If HCA would need to be evacuated at anytime, we seek shelter at St. Andrew School right up the road.  We did a fantastic job staying quiet and walking in a line.  The walk was long but with the help of some fifth grade friends we did great!

Every day we talk about the weather; what we see, hear and feel.  We took a nature walk around the neighborhood to see what signs of Fall we could see or hear.  We each collected a few leaves to bring back to school to check out.  After a brief discussion of color, spots, and texture, we used our findings for leaf rubbing.  This is a quick and easy activity for our kids to appreciate our world.

~FALL SENSORY BIN~

Sensory bins fall under Practical Life Skills ~ Sensory bins let a child explore, discover and create play using practical life skills (dumping, filling, scooping) and learn valuable play skills as well as  understanding the  senses. Our fall sensory bin allowed us to use our sense of touch, sight, touch, and sounds.  The bin was filled with acorns, leaves, pumpkins and gourds that the children could explore.

Some days, when we have worked super hard or are just having a rough day, we NEED to play.  We are lucky to have both a beautiful playground and an EC community room.  To adults we may look like we are 'just' playing however play is a huge part of  learning!

Play  allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength.  It is through play where we learn to adapt to our surroundings in the world.

Some of our favorites in the EC room:  the Diner, cars, and Magnatiles!

FIRE PREVENTION

This week we talked about fire safety and the importance of fire drills.  We talked about a drill not being a real fire, that we need to use our walking feet because a drill is not a game, that practicing keeps us safe, and if we are ever on fire to STOP, DROP, and Roll.

Learning the steps to keep us safe!

Fire fighter's gear may look scary but it keeps them and us safe!
STOP

DROP

AND ROLL!

Our Religion theme this week within God Loves Me is God gave me a nose!  We talked about the different things that we can use our nose to smell.  We talked about different places certain smells are found.  For example, you would smell pancakes in the kitchen, a bakery smells like  donuts and perfume smells like some of our Moms.  Encourage your child to notice and appreciate the sense of smell by pointing out aromas of foods you may be cooking, flowers or freshly cut grass.

In science we used small droppers to drop tiny colored water beads into oil.  Many of us predicted the drops would just change the color of the oil.  Much to our surprise, the oil and water never mixed and the small water bubbles danced around in the oil.

Orange you glad I didn't say banana??

Many of us have runny noses and coughs.  What better way to fight our germs than enjoying  a little Vitamin C from an orange?!  We have really been enforcing coughing into our elbows, using a tissue and washing our hands.   This is a great thing to practice at home as well.

On Thursday we had the Blessing of the Animals.  Many of our older friends brought their turtles, cats, dogs, reptiles and bunnies.  Above are the Nursery pets.  Thank you for sharing your pictures.
