Getting ready for some Halloween fun!

Nursery two is caught in a web of friends!!   We continue to learn how to be friends with each other.  Sharing and waiting our turn can be tough when you are only 2 but we are getting there!

We did our fair share of process art this week crafting some Halloween projects.  We painted candy corns using wine corks; we followed the white, orange and yellow pattern that a candy corn has.

We used small pumpkin halves to "stamp" and make an authentic creation.

We used cotton balls to create spooky ghosts!  Pulling apart the cotton strengthens our fine motor skills.

We continue to work hard building on learned and learning new lessons.

Kylie working on a puzzle.

Remy working on a puzzle.

Harper "cutting" up fruit.

Grace working on a matching lesson.

After we work hard, we need to move around and let some of our two year old energy out.  The best way to do that is to DANCE!!!   We love to dance and sing in N2.

Firetrucks and Pumpkins!

This week Squad 26 A-Platoon from Upper Darby Fire Co.  paid us a visit!  Special thanks to Captain Epright, Firefighters Lynch and Tully for showing us the fire truck and its equipment.  We were very excited to learn and be able to check out the fire truck!!

Listening to the fireman.

We spent some time this week learning how a pumpkin grows!  We read books about pumpkin farming and learned a simple song That's How A Pumpkin Grows.  Thursday we cut open a small pumpkin to explore the outer and inner layers of our pumpkin.  We all thought the inside was super slimy!!!!   Today we will be planting the seeds we scooped out to see if we can grow a pumpkin.  (pictures coming soon)

Things to do at home :-)

Twos live in the land of what's mine IS mine.  We have been working on waiting our turn, asking for a turn, and sharing.  You can practice turn taking easily at home.  For instance, hug a doll, saying it's Mommy's turn to hug.  Then hand the doll over and say " Now it's your turn to hug the doll." This can be done several times back and forth.   Praise your child when you see them sharing! When we model sharing behavior the children will follow.  For instance, if you are eating a snack, offer to share some.

Have a great weekend!

Picture Day and Fire Prevention Week

I am happy to say that Picture Day was a great success!  Some of our friends were hesitant at first but our friends Mr. Mike and Miss Joanne (the photographers) got some great smiling out of your children :-)  I really can not wait for you to see their beautiful pictures.

This week in N2 we talked a lot about fire prevention.  It is a hard concept for toddlers to understand however it can be introduced on their level with books, simple songs, crafts, and games.  We read stories about fire safety; No Dragons for Tea By Jean Pendziwol and Let's Meet a Firefighter By Gina Bellisario were two of our favorites.  We played a game called "Hot" or "Not Hot".  The children were given a picture of an item, they then had to decided if it was hot or not and place it in the correct column.

In keeping with the fire prevention theme, we made Dalmatian fire dog hats.  The dots on the hats are created from your child's fingerprint.

Woof!

Cutest Dalmatians I ever did see!

N2 continues to be hard workers during lesson time.  Each week we learn new lessons and extend our work time by  a few minutes.  We are often proud when we successfully complete a task or learn something new.

Happy Friday from N2!

We continue to work very hard in N2!  We have improved as a whole in areas such as sitting at the table, putting our belongings in our cubbies independently, throwing out our trash after snack and walking quietly in the hallway.  While this may seem like small potatoes...its quite a big deal around here!  During our work time we have done both individual and small group lessons.  Each week we will continue to learn a new lesson or two.  Much of our focus has been on matching like objects (see donut game below), identifying colors and matching colors from our classroom environment.  Again, you can reinforce this at home by playing games like " I Spy" or "can you find me a ____ ?"

Grace begins our donut matching game...

Foster finds a match!

We start working on strengthening fine motor skills at the age of two.  These actions help their little hands and fingers to build up the strength needed to write.  As you can see in the pictures below, the clothes pin lesson requires the child to pinch and squeeze.  With every movement, fingers and hands are getting a workout.  Some other things that aide in strengthening the hand/finger muscles are knobbed puzzles, Play doh, or even allowing your child to squeeze the ketchup bottle at dinner.

Lessons to strengthen our pincer grip.

Lucas is concentrating so hard!

Grace almost has it!

We found a few ripe tomatoes in 4th grade's garden!  We picked a handful , washed them, and had a delicious & healthy snack.  Some of us tasted, some of us ate the whole thing and others decided cheeseballs were a better snack:-)

Yummmm!!!!!

Reminder:

We go outside EVERYDAY,  as the weather begins to change, please make sure your child is dressed accordingly.

Kylie loves to slide down the slide!

Foster catching some rays!
