We have had a busy first full week of school! Although we still have some tears, which is completely age appropriate, the children are adjusting nicely to their Nursery School environment. We are learning how to clean up after ourselves at snack, lunch and work time, roll and unroll a work rug, and walk quietly in a line . The children are working hard, and we are so proud of them.
In the last week and a half we have read books about the beginning of school. The children really enjoy The Night Before Preschool by Natasha Wing and Pete the Cat Rocking In My School Shoes by Eric Litwin. I have introduced how to handle a book properly. For example, I demonstrated how to turn the pages gently as well as identified the front and back of the book. We have also read books and sang songs about apples. We will continue to do so in the weeks coming in preparation for Fall. Wednesday we had an apple tasting and created a pictograph of our votes. Granny Smith won by a landslide!! We also had a chance to examine inside of the apple. We observed the core and saw that the green apple had white seeds and the red apple had brown seeds.
We began our specials this week. The schedule is as follows:
Monday/Wednesday - Gym
Tuesday/Thursday - Music
Friday - Art
Things to Do at Home:
-Practice cleaning up with your child. Montessori education is all about independence and responsibility. We are learning how to clean up our work before beginning a new activity. Reviewing this at home is greatly appreciated.
-Review primary colors: red, yellow and blue. You can pick out various items of red, yellow and blue in your environment and ask your child to identify them. If they have mastered colors, you can do this with shapes.
