Have you heard?  This week we became scientists!

In science, we did the Skittles Experiment.  This experiment provides many investigative opportunities. Skittles are coated in food coloring and sugar. When you pour water over the skittles the color coating dissolves spreading through the water.  The color sugar dissolves into the water and then diffuses through the water, making it the color of the skittle.

We are so fortunate to be in a community where we have time carved out of  our schedule to be a whole.  On Monday, we got together as an entire student body and met our "families".  The students worked together to create family pennants which can be seen in our cafeteria.

We got some wiggles out this week with a fun gross motor activity:
Balloon Tennis!

This week we started our combined Montessori work period with Pre-K.  We have been working very hard learning new work.

Fostering a child's independence is an important aspect to development.  In Nursery 3 the children begin their independence journey.  Many of the children are struggling in pulling up their pants after using the bathroom.  I am always willing to assist after they have given it a good try; I ask that you do the same.  Encourage them to try themselves and then praise them for the attempt/completed task.

September 16th - September 20th

Sensory Activities

Sensory play is any activity that stimulates a child's senses: touch, smell, taste, movement, balance, sight and hearing.  Sensory activities promote exploration and naturally encourage children to use their senses while they play, create, investigate and explore.

The Fall Sensory bin is filled with leaves, acorns, pumpkins, gourds, and cinnamon sticks.  The children enjoyed exploring these items.

Playing with play dough is a great way to help children develop their fine motor skills.  All that rolling, squeezing, pinching and patting is great for little hands and fingers.

We used red, green and yellow play dough to make apples for our orchards.

Apple Taste Testing
We explored a red, a yellow, and a green apple.  We compared size and taste.  We were not fans of the green apple at all!  The red apple was definitely a crowd pleaser :)

Apple Sorting
We reinforced our classifying skills by sorting apples by color: red, yellow and green.

We are continuing to review and learn new Montessori material.  Here are a few of our friends working with the Pink Tower and Brown Stairs.

We had our first fire drill!
We will practice safety drills with the entire school throughout the course of the school year.  Prior to the drills there is a lot of conversation about the drill and what we do with ourselves to keep us safe.  We had our first fire drill this week.  As a class we talked about why we get out of the building, firemen are helpers, and the loud bell is not scary just telling us to get out. The bell was startling however, we did a great job!
